New ‘Ship Financing Portal’ introduced in the EU

The European Commission has introduced a ‘Ship Financing Portal’ aimed at enhancing access to external financing in the maritime industry.
16 September 2024

The ‘Ship Financing Portal’ is a new online platform that serves as a centralised hub for maritime industry financing products offered by the EU, Member States, and private financial institutions.

New sustainability standards, including the EU Emission Trading Scheme and the FuelEU Regulation, require significant investment in cleaner fuels and energy-efficient technologies. From this year, the EU Emission Trading Scheme was extended to apply to the maritime sector, putting a direct price on ships greenhouse gas emissions.  From 2025, this will be supplemented by the new FuelEU regulation, which will set maximum limits on the yearly greenhouse gas intensity of the energy used by a ship. The ‘Ship Financing Portal’ is designed to support decarbonization efforts by providing access to ‘green financing’ for solutions that meet these regulatory requirements.

Launched in July 2024, the portal currently lists 52 financing options, such as sustainability-linked loans, green bonds, and grants. Among these is the Danish Maritime Fund, which supports growth in Denmark’s shipping and shipbuilding sectors. The platform’s search filters allow users to refine their search by financing type, amount, technology category, and readiness level, and it is regularly updated to include the latest opportunities.

The ‘Ship Financing Portal’ is likely to be of particular benefit to small and mid-size shipowners who wish to explore alternative ways of funding. The initiative is therefore a small but welcome step that helps the maritime industry stay competitive while advancing the EU’s climate objectives.
