I have been working as a project law student at Gorrissen Federspiel since the summer of 2025. This part-time position can be started as early as the third semester of law school and complements my studies. When looking for a student job, I prioritised finding somewhere where I could see how law is applied in practice, with professional and social development opportunities at the forefront.
Starting at a law firm in your third semester may seem overwhelming, as you may question whether you are academically prepared for the work. However, this concern quickly proved to be unfounded. The onboarding process is thorough, and you are not expected to master all the necessary skills from day one. There are also ample opportunities to receive support and feedback from fellow students and lawyers in the firm, which has been invaluable for my professional development.
My main responsibilities relate to major corporate mergers and acquisitions. In this role, I work alongside other project law students to organise and structure data rooms and review material to identify significant legal issues relating to the transaction. This gives me a practical insight into what to focus on during due diligence processes. The project law student team assists the firm’s other practice groups with legal assignments, providing the team with insight into many different areas of the law and the associated workflows. The variety of these assignments gives you a good sense of the breadth of Gorrissen Federspiel’s practice.
The firm’s culture of teamwork is characterised by openness and trust. You will learn through taking on responsibility, and you are encouraged to ask questions and seek help. This fosters a safe work environment in which you will quickly feel supported and welcomed by a large, close-knit team of students who share a strong sense of team spirit.
Working as a project law student has deepened my understanding of commercial and legal matters, offering me a more nuanced view of the lawyer’s role. I find it rewarding to follow major transactions, as this provides valuable insight into the commercial processes involved in completing complex deals. Nikolai joined the Corporate/M&A team as a law student in my third semester, and is currently working with the Real Estate group at Gorrissen Federspiel. His working day consists of a combination of regular and ad hoc tasks, and it’s this variety that he thrives on.
